MISSION
The conceptualization of "Picture my Participation" was developed following the completion of a UNICEF project that
aimed to provide a comprehensive manual to aid in the identification and monitoring of children with disabilities in low
and middle income countries (LAMI) to ensure their current needs and challenges are understood but also ultimately
addressed. Therefore, the aim of this project was to develop a culturally appropriate measurement tool that employs
culturally respectful processes to capture participation outcomes distinctive to children and youth with disabilities in
LAMI countries and/or marginalised communities. 'Picture My Participation' is a paediatric self-report tool that uses
pictures to discuss health-related topics, and to identify participation frequencies, levels of involvement, and barriers
and facilitators to a child’s participation in home, school and community settings. Using the tool, this project hopes to
gain an accurate understanding of the participation outcomes of children with disabilities in LAMI countries, and
ultimately intervenes in ways that will effectively and sustainably address their needs.
T
HE SOLUTION THAT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED
The development of 'Picture my Participation' was guided by the International Classification of Functioning, Disability
and Health-Child and Youth version, the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Rights of
Persons with Disabilities, where articles of the conventions were linked to ICF participation domains. It was developed
as an adaption of existing participation outcome measures, the Participation and Environment Measure for Children and
Youth and the Paediatric Activity Card Sort. It has been developed for children from marginalised communities and low
socio-economic environments, in collaboration and continual consultation with these children and communities. The
tool can be used as a talking mat or via application software that can collect both population data and data for clinical
decision-making. 'Picture My Participation' is intended to be used with children but can be administered with significant
others along the principles of kinship.
