O

VERALL GOAL

/

MISSION

There are many people with intellectual disabilities that cannot follow the regular news and are therefore

disadvantaged in information. Apart from that, there are only a few official websites that provide their information

easy-to-read. Since official websites should be accessible for everyone, there is an enormous need for easy-to-read

information. The mission of the project is to teach people with handicap to produce easy-to-read news reports.

Participants, all people with special needs, are trained to understand the journalistic approach to information. The

overarching goals are to prepare participants for regular jobs, especially as experts for easy-to-read texts and eventually

to provide easy-to-read news on a daily basis for the online-platform of the KURIER, an Austrian daily paper.

T

HE SOLUTION THAT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED

Participants, all people with special needs, are trained to understand the journalistic approach to information. They

learn to write their own stories and other texts into easy-to-read texts. Furthermore, they learn to handle modern

information technology and to publish in the web. With the easy-to-read news, important information for persons with

intellectual disabilities is provided. Tests have shown that a special editorial team was needed to provide easy-to-read

news on a regular basis. The media company was not able to fund such team, so a cooperation with a community

organization, allowed to implement the program. In this way, persons with disabilities become specialists for easy-to-

read texts.
