MISSION

Dorton College establishes robust relationships with mainstream colleges but is a specialist college in its own right for

blind and partially sighted young people. Our mission is to support students to achieve academically, socially and

emotionally to ensure they are ready for the wider world and can live their lives independently which increases their

opportunities to fulfil their ambitions. Local colleges deliver academic and vocational learning and students living in

Dorton’s community houses learn practical life skills that increases their emotional well-being, raises levels of resilience

and creates independence through individually tailored interventions.

T

HE SOLUTION THAT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED

Dorton College students study academic and vocational qualifications at mainstream colleges. Dorton provides

specialist support to enable them to fully access the curriculum and the extra curricula activities. The students live in

community houses generally based near the college where they learn and develop the skills they will need for the future

– should they choose to move onto higher education or into employment. Independence of choice and the resilience,

knowledge and skills to live fulfilling lives is the primary outcome for Dorton College students. They have developed

their own modular Jig Saw curriculum.
