MISSION
To offer a free education, training and development opportunity to poverty stricken unemployed youth and persons
with disabilities in Rural and deep rural areas of South Africa. The chosen individuals achieve, after the 12 month
intensive program, a National Certificate in Business Administration Services and simultaneously one year of relevant
workplace experience. This combination of qualification and experience makes the unemployed individual more
employable by industry in the main stream economy, creating accessibility to these vulnerable members of our
community.
Further, in the third month of the learner ship, ATHENA Private College provided each learner with a 10 inch Android
based Tablet PC. This piece of technology offered a duality in purpose.
The first is the obvious introduction to Information Technology and its benefits to familiarizing our learners to the basic
IT programs used in business. The second is the use of the Tablet PC as a cost effective medium for the use of android
applications that act as assistive devices/technology to assist our learners with disability in the workplace.
T
HE SOLUTION THAT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED
The approach of a fully funded learner ship (intensive 12 month learning program, 1 week theoretical training locally, 3
weeks practical relevant workplace experience in a host workplace locally) based on a scarce and critical skill, together
with an Android Tablet PC and relevant assistive software, has proven to be a practical, cost effective, development
solution. ATHENA is a Mobile Private College. They travel to the people rather than the people have to travel to them,
saving them personal expense and maintaining their current family and social support systems.
