ACTS ABOUT SIZE AND SCOPE
1.
The Daisy Lanka Foundation has produced 1096 textbooks so far and related educational books in accessible
formats in Sinhalese for use by visually impaired students in Sri Lanka
2.
The DLF has also purchased 80 electronic reading devices for loan use by students. DLF estimates that
approximately 10 000 visually impaired students at secondary and university level will finally benefit from the
accessible books produced in Sinhalese
3.
Students in six institutions (Universities and Libraries) will receive electronic devices and access to the accessible
textbooks
O
UTLOOK
This model has already been replicated in Bangladesh, Nepal and India and the Accessible Books Consortium continues
to plan further similar projects in other least developed countries. The costs of implementation in Sri Lanka have to date
been less than 47.000 € which includes the development of the new TTS Software in Sinhala. This model can also be
built upon by DLF in the whole country of Sri Lanka by reaching out to other schools and institutions and working with
government and local stakeholders.
