VERALL GOAL
/
MISSION
The overall goal of this project is to improve the quality of life for disabled persons in Kazakhstan by developing and
launching a mobile application that informs about the accessibility of the existing infrastructure for disabled persons.
This application shall be made accessible to every cell-phone user. The application will allow disabled persons to receive
information about the accessibility of the place they want or have to go to and shall help to contribute to an
independent life.
T
HE SOLUTION THAT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED
In Kazakhstan only very few buildings are fully accessible and equipped with, for example, entrance ramps, elevators or
appropriate toilets. Moreover, if they are, they do not correspond to fully accessible standards. In addition, pavements
and crosswalks quite often do not have special slip roads for people using invalid carriages and traffic lights are not
equipped with a signal device for visionary impaired people. Because of this lack of fully accessible infrastructure, the
movement of disabled persons is very limited and if they want or have to go somewhere, like for business, to their
workplace or just to the cinema, they are dependent on someone others help or simply cannot use the given
infrastructure. To unwind the situation the mentioned application shall inform persons with physical disabilities and
visual impairments, but also mobility impaired people without disabilities -– like senior citizens or mothers with baby
carriages –, about the accessibility of the given infrastructure. The application will be free of charge, can be installed on
devices with different operating systems and can be downloaded in two languages (Kazakh and Russian). It also will be
equipped appropriately corresponding to the needs of visually impaired persons.
