MISSION
The mission of the project is to support students with disabilities in elementary schools/junior high schools/high schools
and higher educational institutions to a successful transition to postsecondary education or employment. Through this
program, the addressed students are expected to become leaders in contributing to an inclusive Japanese society that
accepts and welcomes diverse people with various disabilities.

HE SOLUTION THAT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED
For students with disabilities the use of technology is one of the main keys to be successful within mainstream classes
and the society at all, but technology as a reasonable accommodation in mainstream educational settings has not been
a well-known concept within the Japanese society. Especially in high-stakes, testing students with disabilities have to
compete with other students by using various mainstream technologies for supporting their own difficulty. As a solution
the projects members work together with different Japanese technology companies to provide technologies (like e.g.
tablets, text-to-speech or assistive technology products) and opportunities to learn how to utilize them. This happens
through an annual summer program, a yearlong online mentoring program, workshops and individual counselling to
students with disabilities. The staff of the project does not develop apps or technology products but a knowledge base
about evidence based practice among specific use cases to utilize mainstream technology as assistive technology to
spread it all over Japan.

ACTS ABOUT SIZE AND SCOPE
1.
Seven high school students and 11 Elementary/Junior High School Students were selected as 2014 scholars out of
the 151 applicants to the DO-IT Japan.

applicants to the DO-IT Japan.
