ACTS ABOUT SIZE AND SCOPE
Pilot Year 1 (2012/13): 3 facilitators trained; 3 schools in pilot - one early years, one middle years, one senior years
serving 1,367 students.
Year 2 (2013/14): 2 additional schools in pilot - one senior years, one early years - for an overall total of 1866 students.
One brand new school promoted collegial staff relations by implementing the domain “sense of belonging”. The other
two schools conducted the assessment with teachers and educational assistants to discover very different perspectives
from the two critical stakeholders.
Year 3 (2014/15): one additional facilitator trained; 5 additional schools in pilot at all levels for an overall total of 3,576
students. One of the Year 1 schools conducted a re-assessment and found improved results in all three domains and all
10 sub-domains that were included (data available on request). A second Year 1 school reported successful
accomplishment of all three of the school goals established in 2013.
OUTLOOK
PICS was developed for use by schools anywhere. The main costs of implementation include hiring or training and
assigning a facilitator and committing staff development time to completing the instrument. Since Manitoba schools are
mandated to engage in school planning, those costs seem minimal in exchange for providing a focus on inclusion as a
school or divisional priority. The PICS instrument itself is open and cost-free if used by a trained facilitator. Publication of
the instrument is anticipated during summer, 2015. As mentioned, the use of PICS will expand to other schools in River
East Transcona School Division and the collaborators will promote its use with other schools and divisions.
