VERALL GOAL
/
MISSION
The overall goal is to help China's disabled children in rural and remote areas to enjoy a suitable and effective education
in a regular community school or kindergarten, and to realize their right to be educated.
T
HE SOLUTION THAT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED
The programme seeks to change the way parents, teachers, and community members in the rural areas of Chengdu,
Sichuan province, view the intellectual and developmental progress of children with disabilities by providing them with
the necessary social support. With the natural support of parents, teachers, neighbours, and fellow students, and by
providing reasonable facilities and a variety of services, disabled children are able to enter local schools and to
participate in an inclusive education. To ensure the right of disabled children to be educated, teachers must receive
professional training, and ability of student to learn must be enhanced by local medical and rehabilitation support.

F
ACTS ABOUT SIZE AND SCOPE
1)
The programme uses the Chinese compulsory education network to implement the project, with approximately 100
disabled students distributed in each of 30 schools, for a total of 3,000 children. Each child is supported by 1-2
parents or guardians, 1-3 community members, and 2-3 teachers and professionals. Overall, some 12,000 to 24,000
people are participating in the project in rural and remote areas of China’s provinces and counties.
2)
The project has been implemented gradually, establishing the basic pattern in the first year, with just 10 students in
each of the counties and cities. Building on this, a support system has been established by training local personnel,
accumulating local resources, thus establishing the basis for the development of the project over the following two
years.
