ACTS ABOUT SIZE AND SCOPE
In the first phase of the SEEPD project, 1119 teachers were trained in inclusive teaching and learning practices.
900 learners were identified with mild to severe impairments in the 17 pilot schools. 7000 learners were screened
for visual acuity resulting in 2000 referrals. 1000 learners were taught the use of low vision skills and assistive
devices. 1000 referrals were made for those with hearing difficulties.
In the last two years, the project has witnessed 14 deaf children in one pilot secondary school, the first experience
of its kind in any government owned secondary school in the country. Sign language interpreters are employed and
paid by the SEEPD program. 19 blind students have attended these pilot schools and of the 10 who have so far
written end of course examinations, 8 have been successful. 15 students with impairments are currently enrolled in
the Higher Teacher Training College.

UTLOOK
SEEPD is in the process of signing a memorandum of understanding with the University of Bamenda which is host to the
Higher Teacher Training College. This will enable SEEPD to provide short courses on Inclusive Education to lecturers and
trainee teachers. Consequently, approximately 700 teachers in training will be exposed to Inclusive Education annually
for the next three years. So far 1123 children with impairments have accessed SEEPD's mainstream pilot schools. The
forecast for 2016 is a 50% increase as a lot of awareness is being raised in the area of Inclusive Education.
