VERALL GOAL

MISSION
The mission of this pilot project is to improve the access to education for refugee children with a handicap in the
refugee camp of Gihembe (rural area) and in the town Kigali (urban area).
To reach this objective, the project plans to:
Elaborate a pilot study on the needs of refugees with a handicap in Gihembe and in Kigali.
Share the results of the study during a dissemination meeting with the main partners, which includes the Minister
for the Management of Disasters and Refugees (MIDIMAR), the High Commissioner for Refugees (HCR),
organizations representing handicapped persons, and other international organization working on refugee problems
in Rwanda.
Organize three meetings with the partners mentioned above to be sure that their strategies of internal
development lead to meeting the needs of handicapped refugees, with a particular emphasis on education.
Train 30 service providers to refugees on the right of handicapped refugee children to an education.
Have a one-day brainstorming session with representatives of NGOs working in the area of human rights and people
with a handicap, MIDIMAR, and UNHCR to discuss the inclusion of handicapped refugee in the education system.

HE SOLUTION THAT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED
The project recognizes that education is a very effective tool to fight against marginalization, and through a cooperative
and coordinated approach this project will allow all children – including refugees – to have the same chance to get an
education and, consequently, to grow in an environment of greater security.

A three day training course was organised : “Strengthening protection of persons with disabilities in forced
displacement”
