/

MISSION

The Indonesian education system is developing new inclusive schools, which enroll children with severe learning

disabilities who would previously have been excluded from education. Inclusive pedagogies are needed can support

these children and their peers in learning together. A central issue is that of classroom communication. Research

indicates that key word signing has proved useful both in supporting the development and empowerment of children

with severe learning disabilities and supporting inclusive educational practices. Signalong Indonesia, developed by Dr.

Budiyanto at UNESA, is a key word signing approach developed specifically to support inclusive classroom practice in

Indonesian schools. Dr Budiyanto has trained teachers from across Indonesia in the approach and supports pilot schools

in East Java, with a national ‘roll out’ planned for 2016. The training materials are free and accessible. The approach

gives children a voice in schools and tackles the stigmatization of disabled children in Indonesian society.

T

HE SOLUTION THAT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED

Signalong Indonesia is a key word signing approach in which manual signs are used to indicate the key aspects of spoken

language (it supports and does not replace spoken language). This allows teachers and children to communicate more

easily with one another.

ACTS ABOUT SIZE AND SCOPE

1.

Teachers from 44 schools, in 33 of Indonesia’s 34 provinces, have been trained in the approach.

Signalong Indonesia Dictionary and Classroom Symbols have been produced.

O

UTLOOK

The Signalong Indonesia approach is built on particular strategies (derived from Signalong UK), which can be adapted for

other countries and cultures. Interest has already been shown in doing this by organizations in neighboring countries.

This is because the approach was developed to allow implementation across Indonesia itself -the fourth largest country
