Self-advocacy in Israel and worldwide, has led to innovative practices for removing barriers and enhancing full participation, thus paving the way to the implementation of article 12 and achieving legal capacity.
The lecture describes the process of working with the self-advocacy groups of people with intellectual disabilities - Beit Issie Shapiro and Elvin Israel advocacy groups, supported by the Los Angeles Federation and the Ruderman Family Foundation - which led to the active involvement of the national advocacy group in changing the law of guardianship and their claim to sovereignty over their lives.
