MISSION
Statistics showed a significant increase of the number of students with intellectual disabilities receiving post-secondary
education in Taiwan. However, the existing services for students with intellectual disabilities mostly focus on tutoring
for academic life. Therefore a program was established which should explore and respond to all the needs of its
beneficiaries, which includes support in every day college life. The program was founded in partnership with a college
and is built up on the basis of their support system. The support program was implemented as a result of the special
education law mandate of the program “college resource room”.
T
HE SOLUTION THAT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED
At first the program evaluated the current support system for students with intellectual disabilities in post-secondary
education in Taiwan and developed linking strategies to improve the service system. The program provides services in
different areas including academic guidance, daily life assistance, peer relationship, independent living skills and career
planning. The staff is encouraged to jointly develop an individual service plan with college students with intellectual
disabilities.
