Huge congratulations to
Hani Shmerling
, our teacher at Beit Issie
Shapiro’s school, who won “Mora Shel Hamedina” contest and is the
Israeli Teacher of the Year 2014.
1,700 teachers competed for this prestigious award which was
presented by President Shimon Peres before his retirement.
Chani Shachak, principal of Beit Issie Shapiro’s school
said,
“Hani gives all parents the feeling their child is
unique; she focuses on the strengths of the child, and
on the hope for that child’s future. Hani partners with
the parents and gives the family confidence that
she will be with them always.”
This approach
of embracing the family is a legacy of Beit
Issie Shapiro and resonates in all we do.
Mazel Tov, Hani. We are so proud of you!

BIS wins Microsoft contest!
BIS will soon have an app to benefit children with disabilities
worldwide. The IssieFun app is an imaginative game for children with
disabilities, in which the hero is a child.
IssieFun was developed through Microsoft’s worldwide “Innovate for
Good” campaign which is a unique international initiative that aims to
create applications to address a social need.
On May 13th, 2014, the team representing Beit Issie Shapiro was
chosen as the winner by Microsoft’s esteemed panel, including the
Israeli Minister of Science, Technology and Space, Yaakov Perry.
Microsoft spokesperson Hagar Kustianovsky said,
“This project
combines technology, social value, and voluntarism, and is primarily
designed to channel the knowledge and skills of youth to these
values — and will benefit not only them, but the rest of society.”
Congratulations to
Barbara Abrams
,

Honorary Director, who was chosen as
this year’s Canadian Friends of Beit Issie
Shapiro volunteer to be recognized.
According to Barbara,
“Where we help
improve the lives of others less fortunate
than ourselves, we somehow gain more
than we give. It has been a privilege to be
associated with this most compassionate,
innovative and forward thinking
organization.”
Barbara – thank you for
your time and energy!
