Prof. Diane Nelson-Brian: Nothing about me without me: Supported leadership

2011

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2008) notes in its preamble, general principles, and general obligations that persons with disabilities should have the opportunity to be actively involved in decision-making processes about policies and programmes, including those directly concerning them, and that States Parties shall closely consult with and actively involve persons with disabilities through their representative organizations. This proposed presentation will describe the origins and purposes of supported leadership for people with developmental disabilities especially in light of preamble, general principles and obligations, and Article 30 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. SUPPORTED LEADERSHIP promotes the full participation of individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities as members of boards, advisory committees and other decision-making entities. Key factors in promoting supported leadership include: Technical Assistance, Individual Supports and Training. Each of these factors will be briefly described with a focus on the individual with developmental disability, the support person, and non-disabled members of boards Finally, a case study will be presented to illustrate the use of supported leadership via Skype. Resources on how to facilitate supported leadership will be provided to attendees.
